Christoph Willibald Gluck(1714-1787), German composer,  born in Germamy but later lived in Vienna and died there. He entered the the Univ. of Prague, apparently nothing came of his studies there,  his music ability was essentially self-taught. He went to Vienna, Milan, London, Venice, Turin, Dresden and Hamburg, in Milan he studied with Giovanni Battista Sammartini. From 1752 until the 1770's he lived mostly in Vienna, he was appointed as Konzertmeister in the court of the imperial Prince Joseph Friedrich Wilhelm of Saxe-Hildburghausen. He composed operas(Orfeo ed Euridice, Iphilgenie en Aulide etc), secular vocal music, 18 symphonies and 6 trio sonatas. The Year 2014 marks his 300th anniversary of birth.
